Masmaat Santana, who has been a regular for five seasons with the Astros, is hoping to bring some much-needed depth for the bullpen. Santana, 24, missed most of October with a shoulder injury from last year.

“We’re trying to get him back to 100 percent physically,” GM Jeff Luhnow said. “That’s his goal. We’ll support him going through what happened a bit.”

Santana spent two years in the Cubs organization before spending a season with the Yankees late this year. During those previous years, Santana had a 3.13 ERA in just 36 innings with the Yankees. He finished the 2015 season at Class AA Akron, posting a 3.19 ERA in 47.2 innings with 22 holds, 33 hits and five homers.

Santana also has a reputation for being streaky with his delivery, posting four-hit games in four of his first 13 starts in 2014.

Santana went to high school in the Dominican Republic, where he was a three-year letterman at the baseball facility in a city called San Martín. Santana returned to his hometown of Houston on Sept. 11 and attended the Astros minor league affiliate, the Lake Elsinore Storm.

“We’re not looking for a miracle,” Luhnow said. “But we’re looking for guys that can catch his eye when he wants to hit somebody. And then we’ll help him get through it by going through spring training.”
